As a single woman in NYC, there is always a dating experience worth writing about. Here is one that happened just a few weeks ago (Nov 14) and is bound to cause a few reactions. One of my very good friends, who is absolutely beautiful, has a profile on Model Mayhem. She received a phone call from this woman who is supposed to be a "matchmaker" looking to hook up one of her millionaire clients. Matchmakers are becoming very common, so my friend accepts, and arrangements are made for them to meet over coffee for no longer than 30 minutes. My friend said she knew something was weird when she went to the bathroom and he slipped $80 in her purse. Later that day, she was contacted by the "matchmaker" looking to set up an actual date offering to pay my friend $400. The conversation went like this:
My friend: Uhh such-and-such looks a little old, how old is he?
The matchmaker: I’m sorry, I really don't know how old he is.
My friend: Well can you give me a little bit more info about this guy?
The matchmaker: Well these guys are really successful, they come from all walks of life, and they have lots of money. So, there is no need to ask them questions--we find out what they want and get it for them. Some have kids, some don't, some are married some are not.
My friend: WHAT? He's married?
The matchmaker: I don't know, I never asked him.
My friend: Well I don't think I’m comfortable doing this.
The matchmaker: It's only on 60 minutes out of your life. This man could pay your rent, buy you cars, clothes, whatever you want. And this will simply be your relationship.
My friend: What would simply be our relationship? This is really weird, is this guy expecting me to have sex with him?
My friend: What would simply be our relationship? This is really weird, is this guy expecting me to have sex with him?
The matchmaker: Come on, women do it all the time. Go to dinner with a guy, sleep with him, and never see him again.
My friend: Am I or am I not suppose to be sleeping with this man?
My friend: Am I or am I not suppose to be sleeping with this man?
The matchmaker: YES
So, offended, my friend told her never to contact her again. The truth of the matter is, some may not think this is a big deal. Some may agree with the points the matchmaker made. However, there is a lot of danger in a setup like this. Number one: No background check on these men could mean they are criminals. What about this guy being a psycho? What if my friend never asked "does he expect sex?" and went on the date. He could have tried to take it because he was paying for it. So all my single ladies, be careful with online profiles, skeevy old rich men and dishonest people.
